Quartets & Very Large Quartet (VLQ)

The Heart of Barbershop Harmony

Quartet singing has always been at the heart of the barbershop experience. While the Stockton Portsmen perform as an award-winning mixed chorus, many members also enjoy singing in quartets and small ensembles where each singer carries an individual voice part.

These groups provide opportunities for musical growth, friendship, community service, and the joy of creating ringing four-part harmony. From long-established ensembles to newly formed quartets, each group reflects the spirit and fellowship that define the Stockton Portsmen.

Sharing songs, friendship, and harmony one chord at a time.

Formed in 2025, Four Heaven's Sake grew out of the camaraderie and musical fellowship of the Stockton Portsmen. The Very Large Quartet (VLQ)

One of the most enjoyable traditions of the Stockton Portsmen is our Very Large Quartet (VLQ).

Following chorus rehearsal, singers gather to form quartets, sing tags, work on songs, and develop their individual musical skills. VLQ provides a relaxed and supportive environment where members can gain confidence, strengthen their ears, improve vocal independence, and experience the unique thrill of quartet singing.

Many of our current quartets began during VLQ sessions. It remains one of the most effective—and most enjoyable—ways for singers to learn, grow, and build lasting friendships through music.

A Tradition That Continues

For generations, quartet singing has been one of the most rewarding parts of the Stockton Portsmen experience. From seasoned performers to newly formed ensembles, our quartets demonstrate what barbershop harmony is all about: friendship, musical excellence, service to the community, and the joy of creating something special together.
