The Stockton Portsmen Barbershop Chorus, an a cappella ensemble rooted in the barbershop tradition, is a respected chapter of The Barbershop Harmony Society(BHS) that holds affiliations with similar organizations worldwide. So anywhere you go, being a part of the Portsmen family allows you to find other singers that share your love of harmonizing.
The Stockton Chapter was organized and received its Charter from the Society on October 18, 1954. When they found a home at The Port of Stockton, the "Portsmen" name was adopted.
The Portsmen strive to provide the greater Stockton area with quality barbershop chorus and quartet music and wholesome family entertainment, while encouraging every individual of good character who loves to sing the opportunity to find their place with us. Their commitment to that mission is reflected by our diverse repertoire of performances at community festivals, corporate functions, charity fundraisers, educational workshops, sporting events, and holiday celebrations, including the beloved "Singing Valentines." Furthermore, they actively contribute to the barbershop music community by participating in conventions and competitions, to foster support for the art form's growth and development.
Ahead of their time in inclusivity, the Portsmen embraced women singers long before the BHS implemented the "Everyone In Harmony" initiative. This progressive stance not only broadened their membership but also reinvigorated their competitive spirit, culminating in their recent achievement becoming the 2024 Far Western District-NorCal East Division Chorus Champions.
Looking towards the future, the Portsmen remain steadfast in their mission to spread the joy of singing and the power of harmony. We welcome singers of all backgrounds who share their passion for preserving this cherished American art form and invite you to join in the camaraderie and fun.
After our chorus rehearsal, some of the chorus members form quartets and sing just for the fun of it. We encourage you to be part of this unique singing experience. You may be surprised how well you'll do! Once you've sung four part harmony ... you'll be hooked for life!
